Meet the Principal

It is my pleasure to continue to be a part of the Whitman Family.   I am elated to begin my fourth year as the proud Instructional Leader!

Prior to becoming principal, I have had many leadership experiences including Assistant Principal, Department Head and Building Assessment Coordinator with the Pontiac School district for 17+ years.  Even with these amazing experiences, I also have 31 years of classroom teaching experience. I will always be a teacher at heart because they all are my Suga Puddins.

I am proud to say I am an alumni of the Pontiac School District.  My educational background includes a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Education Specialist in Administration, a Master of Art in Elementary Education and a Bachelor of Science in Television Production.  By pursuing lifelong learning, I intend to be an example to students and teachers that we should never stop learning.

I am blessed to be the mother of two awesome young adults, Anyia and Anoah..  They are the loves of my life and I have the same expectations for them as I do your children, who I love as if they are my own. I want to see them excel and become productive human beings, who have ample opportunity to become whatever they want to be when they grow up.

It is my privilege to lead Whitman Elementary and the dedicated teachers and students here!  I have HIGH EXPECTATIONS for all students. I believe when students are provided engaging, rigorous, and meaningful instruction in a well-structured learning environment, they will meet those expectations. It is my responsibility to ensure that this takes place each and every day at Whitman.  My goal is to continue to provide a supportive climate and culture at Whitman that is conducive to teaching and learning. By doing so, each individual student and teacher can experience growth to their highest potential.

Whitman is loved by so many wonderful partners and community members, no matter what our needs they are always there to lend a helping hand.

Our Focus will always be to ensure that;

Every child, every day is finding a way to feel connected,

Every child, every day is being challenged by new learning experiences,

Every child, every day knows they have a champion they can turn to.

Educationally Yours,

Dr. Letha Hopkins-Powell
